How Many Bundles Do You Need for a Full Sew-In?

One of the most common questions we get at Wigz&Thingz is: "How many bundles do I actually need?" It's a fair question — order too few and you're left with a thin install; order too many and you've spent more than you needed to. The answer depends on a few key factors: the length you're going for, whether you're adding a closure or frontal, and your natural hair density. Let's break it down.

The General Rule

For most sew-in styles, you'll need 2–4 bundles depending on length and fullness. Here's a quick reference:

Length Bundles Needed
8"–14" (short) 2 bundles
16"–20" (medium) 2–3 bundles
22"–26" (long) 3–4 bundles
28"+ (extra long) 4+ bundles

These estimates assume you're using a 4x4 or 5x5 closure. If you're doing a full 13x4 or 13x6 frontal, you may need one less bundle since the frontal covers more of the hairline.

Closure vs. Frontal: Does It Change the Bundle Count?

Yes — and here's why. A closure sits in the middle or back of your part and covers a smaller area, so your bundles need to fill in more of the head. A frontal spans ear to ear, covering the entire hairline, which means your bundles don't have to work as hard up front.

  • With a closure: stick to the bundle counts in the chart above
  • With a frontal: you can often go one bundle fewer for lengths up to 22"

Hair Density Matters Too

If you have a lot of leave-out or prefer a fuller, thicker look, add an extra bundle. If you're doing a full closure or frontal install with no leave-out, the chart above is your baseline.

For textures like kinky curly or deep wave, the hair takes up more space and naturally looks fuller — you may be able to get away with one fewer bundle than straight or body wave textures.

Our Recommendation: Go with a Complete Install Bundle

If you don't want to guess, our Complete Install Bundles take the math out of it — they come with 3 bundles + a 4x4 closure, pre-matched and ready to install. Available in Deep Wave, Loose Wave, Silky Straight, Kinky Curly, and Kinky Straight.

Quick Summary

  • Short lengths (8"–14"): 2 bundles
  • Medium lengths (16"–20"): 2–3 bundles
  • Long lengths (22"–26"): 3–4 bundles
  • Extra long (28"+): 4+ bundles
  • Using a frontal? You can often subtract one bundle
  • Fuller or curlier textures? They naturally look thicker — adjust accordingly
