How to Dye Hair Extensions at Home (Complete Color Guide)

Can you dye hair extensions at home? Yes — if they're 100% virgin human hair. Virgin hair has never been chemically processed, which means its cuticles are intact and it takes color evenly and predictably. Not sure if your extensions qualify? First read our complete guide to dyeing virgin hair to understand what makes virgin hair color-ready. Then follow the step-by-step process below.

What You'll Need

  • Hair color or bleach + developer
  • Mixing bowl and brush
  • Gloves
  • Timer
  • Rat-tail comb for sectioning
  • Deep conditioner for aftercare
  • Wig stand or mannequin head (for wigs and frontals)

Step 1: Do a Strand Test

Always test a small, hidden section first. Apply your color or bleach mixture to a few strands, process for the planned time, then rinse and evaluate. This tells you how the hair will respond before you commit to the full piece.

Step 2: Wash and Dry the Hair

Start with clean, completely dry extensions. Product buildup can block color penetration and cause uneven results. Wash with a clarifying shampoo, rinse thoroughly, and allow to fully air dry before coloring.

Step 3: Mix Your Color

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific color or bleach. General guidelines:

  • Going darker: Mix color with 20 volume developer
  • Lifting 1–2 levels: Mix with 20–30 volume developer
  • Bleaching: Mix bleach powder with 20–30 volume developer to a creamy consistency. Never use 40 volume on extensions — it causes excessive damage.

Step 4: Apply the Color

Lay bundles flat on a surface or place wigs/frontals on a wig stand. Apply color in sections, working from roots to ends. Make sure every strand is saturated for even coverage.

  • Bundles: Lay flat, apply section by section
  • Wigs & frontals: Place on a wig stand, avoid getting color on the lace base
  • Clip-ins: Remove clips before coloring, lay flat
  • Tape-ins: Remove tape before coloring, re-tape after fully dry

Step 5: Process

  • Darker shades: 30–45 minutes
  • Bleach: 30–45 minutes, checking every 10 minutes. Rinse when hair reaches a pale yellow tone — don't over-process.
  • Fashion colors on pre-lightened hair: Follow the color's instructions, typically 20–30 minutes

Step 6: Rinse and Tone (If Bleaching)

Rinse thoroughly with cool water until water runs clear. If bleaching to blonde, apply a toner to neutralize any remaining yellow or brassy tones. Process toner for 15–20 minutes, then rinse.

Step 7: Deep Condition

This step is non-negotiable. Apply a deep conditioning treatment immediately after rinsing and leave on for at least 15–30 minutes before rinsing out. This restores moisture and minimizes damage from the coloring process.

Step 8: Dry and Style

Allow the hair to air dry completely before styling. Avoid heat for at least 48 hours after coloring to give the cuticle time to close and the color to set. See our heat styling guide for safe techniques once you're ready to style.

Aftercare for Colored Extensions

  • Use color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo
  • Deep condition every 1–2 weeks
  • Apply leave-in conditioner or hair oil to ends regularly
  • Always use heat protectant before styling
  • Wrap or bonnet at night — see our nighttime protection guide
