How to Install a 4x4 Closure Wig at Home (Step-by-Step)
What Is a 4x4 Closure Wig?
A 4x4 closure wig has a lace closure piece that measures 4 inches across and 4 inches back. The closure covers the front of your head and creates the illusion of a natural scalp and part. The rest of the wig is constructed on a weft base.
Compared to a frontal (which spans ear to ear), a 4x4 closure is smaller, easier to install, and more beginner-friendly — while still looking completely natural when done right.
What You'll Need
- 4x4 closure wig
- Wig cap (nude/skin tone)
- Got2b Glued spray or wig adhesive/glue
- Edge control or styling gel
- Scissors
- Rat tail comb
- Bobby pins
- Concealer or foundation (to tint the lace)
- Blow dryer
- Optional: elastic band for melting the lace
Step-by-Step Install
Step 1: Prep Your Natural Hair
Braid your natural hair flat against your head — flat twists or cornrows work best. The flatter the base, the more natural the wig will sit. Put on your wig cap and secure it with bobby pins or Got2b spray.
Step 2: Trim the Lace
Put the wig on your head and position it where you want your hairline to sit. Using sharp scissors, carefully trim the excess lace along the hairline. Cut slowly — you can always trim more, but you can't add it back. Leave about 1–2mm of lace past the hairline.
Step 3: Tint the Lace
Apply a thin layer of concealer or foundation that matches your scalp tone to the lace closure. This eliminates the “lace line” and makes the part look like your actual scalp. Let it dry before moving on.
Step 4: Apply Adhesive
Spray Got2b Glued (or apply wig glue) along your hairline in sections. Let it get tacky — about 30–60 seconds. Apply 2–3 thin layers rather than one thick layer for a stronger hold.
Step 5: Press and Melt the Lace
Press the wig down firmly along the hairline. Use an elastic band around the perimeter to hold it in place while it sets. Use a blow dryer on medium heat to melt the lace into the adhesive. Hold for 30–60 seconds per section.
Step 6: Style Your Edges and Part
Once the lace is melted and secure, remove the elastic band. Use edge control and a toothbrush or edge brush to lay your edges. Style your part with a rat tail comb — add a little concealer into the part line for extra realism.
Step 7: Style the Hair
Cut any remaining lace, then style the wig as desired — curl, straighten, or wear as-is. Always use a heat protectant before applying heat to your extensions.
Tips for a Natural Hairline
- Pluck the hairline — if your wig's hairline looks too dense, use tweezers to lightly pluck a few hairs along the front for a more natural gradient. Do this before installing.
- Bleach the knots — pre-bleached knots make the closure look like hair is growing from your scalp. Many of our wigs come with pre-bleached knots ready to go.
- Don't cut too much lace — leave a thin strip so the adhesive has something to grip.
- Use the right adhesive for your lifestyle — Got2b spray for short-term wear, wig glue or tape for longer hold.
How to Maintain Your 4x4 Closure Wig
- Sleeping: Wrap in a silk scarf or bonnet, or remove and store on a wig stand
- Washing: Remove the wig, wash with sulfate-free shampoo, condition, and air dry on a wig stand
- Lace care: Clean adhesive residue with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton pad before each reinstall
- Frequency: Reinstall every 1–2 weeks for best results and to protect your natural hairline
FAQ
Can I install a closure wig without glue?
Yes — use wig clips sewn into the wig cap, or an adjustable strap. Glueless installs are great for protecting your hairline and for beginners.
How long does a 4x4 closure wig last?
With proper care, a high-quality virgin hair closure wig can last 1–3 years. Raw hair tends to last even longer.
Do I need to bleach the knots myself?
Not always. Many of our closure wigs come with pre-bleached knots — check the product description before purchasing.
What's the difference between transparent lace and HD lace?
Transparent lace is thin and works well for lighter skin tones. HD lace is ultra-thin and melts into a wider range of skin tones with minimal tinting needed.
