DIY Wig Making: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Why Make Your Own Wig?

Making your own wig gives you complete control over the density, length, texture, and lace type — at a fraction of the cost of a pre-made custom unit. Once you learn the basics, you can create a new wig in a few hours. Here’s everything you need to get started.

What You’ll Need

  • Hair bundles — 2–4 bundles depending on length and density (see chart below)
  • Lace closure or frontal — 4x4 closure for a simple install, 13x4 frontal for full hairline coverage
  • Wig cap — dome cap or lace wig cap in your skin tone
  • Wig head & clamp stand
  • Curved needle & weaving thread
  • Scissors, pins, and a rat-tail comb
  • Lace tint spray or foundation (to match your skin tone)
  • Got2b glued or lace paste (for installation)

How Many Bundles Do You Need?

Finished Length Bundles (with closure) Bundles (with frontal)
10–14" 2 bundles 2–3 bundles
16–20" 2–3 bundles 3 bundles
22–26" 3 bundles 3–4 bundles
28"+ 3–4 bundles 4 bundles

Step-by-Step: How to Make a Closure Wig

  1. Prep your wig cap. Stretch the dome cap over the wig head and secure with pins. Mark the hairline with a pencil.
  2. Sew the wefts. Starting at the nape, sew wefts horizontally across the cap in rows, working upward. Cut wefts to fit each row.
  3. Leave space for the closure. Stop sewing about 3–4 inches from the front hairline — this is where your closure will sit.
  4. Attach the closure. Sew the closure onto the cap, aligning it with the front hairline. Secure all edges.
  5. Tint the lace. Spray or brush lace tint onto the closure lace to match your skin tone. Let dry completely.
  6. Pluck the hairline. Use tweezers to lightly pluck the hairline for a natural, less dense look.
  7. Cut the lace. Trim the excess lace from the closure, leaving about 1–2mm from the hairline.
  8. Install the wig. Apply your wig grip band or lace paste, place the wig, and press the lace down. Lay edges with a scarf for 10–15 minutes.

Tips for a Natural-Looking Result

  • Always bleach knots on the closure/frontal before sewing — it makes the hairline look more natural
  • Use baby hairs around the hairline for a realistic finish
  • Vary the weft row spacing — closer rows at the top for more density
  • Steam or flat iron the wig on the head after completion to blend the closure with the bundles
