How to Make a Wig with a Closure: Beginner's Guide

Making your own wig with a closure gives you full control over the density, length, and style — and it's more affordable than buying a pre-made unit. Whether you're a first-timer or just looking to refine your technique, this step-by-step guide walks you through everything you need to create a flawless closure wig from scratch.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather your supplies:

  • 2–3 bundles of your chosen hair texture
  • A 4x4 or 5x5 lace closure
  • A wig cap (dome cap or mesh cap)
  • A mannequin head and clamp
  • Curved needle and weaving thread
  • Scissors and a rat tail comb
  • Wig clips or adjustable strap (optional)
  • Got2B glue or wig adhesive (for frontal-style finishing)

Step 1: Prepare Your Wig Cap

Stretch your dome cap over the mannequin head and secure it with pins or clips. Use a marker to trace your hairline — this is where your closure will sit. Cut a small opening at the front of the cap where the closure will be sewn in.

Step 2: Sew in Your Bundles

Starting at the nape of the cap, sew your bundles in horizontal rows working upward toward the crown. Use a curved needle and weaving thread for the most secure hold. Leave the top section open — this is where your closure will go.

Tips:

  • Keep your rows tight and evenly spaced for a natural-looking part
  • Use 2 bundles for a lighter, more natural density; 3 bundles for fuller volume
  • For lengths 20" and above, 3 bundles are recommended

Step 3: Attach the Closure

Position your lace closure at the top of the cap, aligning it with your traced hairline. Sew it down securely around all four edges. Make sure the part of the closure lines up naturally with the rest of the wig.

HD lace tip: If you're using an HD lace closure, it will melt into your skin more seamlessly — no extra concealing needed.

Step 4: Customize the Hairline

Use small scissors to pluck a few hairs along the hairline of the closure to create a more natural, less blunt edge. You can also use a razor or tweezers to thin out the density near the part for a realistic scalp appearance.

Step 5: Style Your Wig

Now the fun part. Remove the wig from the mannequin and try it on. Secure with wig clips, an adjustable strap, or adhesive along the hairline. Style as desired — curl, straighten, or leave in its natural texture.

Care tip: Always use a heat protectant before applying any heat tools. For wavy or curly textures, refresh with a water and curl cream spritz to maintain the pattern.
