How to Remove Tape-In Hair Extensions at Home (Without Damage)

Tape-in extensions are one of the most gentle extension methods for your natural hair — but only when removed correctly. Pulling them out without the right technique causes breakage, thinning, and adhesive residue that's nearly impossible to remove. Here's the safe, step-by-step process to remove tape-ins cleanly at home.

What You'll Need

Tape-in extension remover or oil-based adhesive remover (coconut oil, baby oil, or a dedicated remover like our Lace Paste Remover)
Rat-tail comb or extension removal tool
Wide-tooth comb
Sulfate-free shampoo and deep conditioner
Microfiber towel

Step 1: Apply the Remover

Saturate each tape bond thoroughly with your adhesive remover. Work section by section, applying the remover directly to the tape tab and allowing it to penetrate for 30–60 seconds before attempting removal.

Never skip this step or rush it. The remover dissolves the adhesive bond — without it, you're pulling the tape off by force, which takes your natural hair with it.

Step 2: Slide the Bonds Apart

Once the remover has had time to work, gently pinch the two tape tabs between your fingers and slide them apart in a downward motion. They should separate with minimal resistance.

If you feel significant resistance, apply more remover and wait another 30 seconds. Never force the bonds apart.

Step 3: Remove Adhesive Residue

After removing the wefts, you'll likely have adhesive residue remaining on your natural hair. Apply more remover to the residue, work it in with your fingers, and gently comb through with a wide-tooth comb. The residue should slide off cleanly.

For stubborn residue, apply coconut or baby oil, leave on for 5–10 minutes, then comb through again.

Step 4: Wash and Condition

Once all extensions and residue are removed, wash your hair thoroughly with a clarifying or sulfate-free shampoo to remove all traces of oil and adhesive. Follow with a deep conditioner — your natural hair will need extra moisture after the removal process.

Step 5: Assess Your Natural Hair

After washing and drying, assess your natural hair for any damage. Some minimal shedding is normal — you'll see the hair that naturally shed during the weeks the extensions were in. Significant breakage or thinning indicates the extensions were too heavy, installed too tightly, or removed incorrectly.
