How to Wash a Lace Front Wig (Without Ruining It)

How Often Should You Wash Your Wig?

For daily wear, wash every 7–14 days. For occasional wear, wash every 15–20 wears. Over-washing strips moisture and weakens the lace. Under-washing causes product buildup that mats the hair and clogs the lace.

What You'll Need

• Sulfate-free shampoo
• Deep conditioner or hair mask
• Wide-tooth comb or detangling brush
• Microfiber towel
• Wig stand or mannequin head
• Lukewarm water
• Optional: lace cleanser or isopropyl alcohol for adhesive removal

Step 1: Remove Adhesive First

If your wig was glued down, remove all adhesive from the lace before washing. Apply a lace adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol to a cotton pad and gently press against the glued areas — never rub, which can tear the lace. Allow it to dissolve fully before wiping away.

Step 2: Detangle Before Wetting

Never put a tangled wig under water. Wet tangles tighten and become nearly impossible to remove without causing breakage and shedding.

Starting from the ends and working up to the roots, gently detangle the hair with a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush. Take your time — rushing this step causes the most damage.

Step 3: Rinse with Lukewarm Water

Hold the wig under lukewarm running water, letting the water flow downward from roots to ends. Never flip the wig upside down or let water run against the direction of the hair — this causes tangling and stresses the wefts.

Rinse until the water runs completely clear.

Step 4: Shampoo Gently

Apply a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo to your palms and work it through the hair in a downward, stroking motion — never scrubbing in circles. Focus on the wefts and lace where product buildup accumulates most.

For the lace specifically, use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub in the direction of the lace knots. Never scrub against the knots — this causes them to loosen and leads to shedding.

Rinse thoroughly until no shampoo remains.

Step 5: Deep Condition

Wigs don't receive natural scalp oils, so conditioning isn't optional — it's essential. Apply a generous amount of deep conditioner from mid-shaft to ends, avoiding the lace and knot area. Leave on for 10–15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

For extra moisture, apply a leave-in conditioner after rinsing and before drying.

Step 6: Dry Correctly

Gently squeeze (never wring) excess water from the hair. Pat dry with a microfiber towel — regular towels cause friction and frizz.
